After a great summer of kayak guiding in the San Juan Islands I finally had some time for a vacation. Erik & Megan Schorr (The Owners of Anacortes Kayak Tours & my lovely employers) graciously invited me along with several other friends for a two week paddle (canoes & kayaks) on the Green River. The route began close to Moab, UT and ended at just below the confluence of the Colorado River. I had previously done most of the route on a Spring Break trip for Mesa State College. That trip we took rafts, starting at Mineral Bottom and ending the trip by heading into the tumultuous waters of Cataract Canyon past the confluence. It was easily one of the best weeks of my life, needless to say I was excited to head back.
This trip turned out to be everything I was hopeful for and more. Since we had elected to go with a nice relaxed pace down the river our days were filled with soaking up the sunshine, day-hiking in slot canyons, searching for petroglyphs, and plenty of campfire tales and shenanigans. We were blessed with beautiful weather up until the last day (really fortunate considering we went in October) and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of folks to enjoy it with. The American Southwest holds a special place in my heart and I always look forward to returning.
